Capital Campaign Kick-off Event

September 10, 2021 @ 4:00 pm - 9:00 pm

.

Weaving a tapestry of love, hope, and empowerment, by embracing life together.

On September 10, 2021, in Louisville, KY-Harbor House of Louisville kicked off its Capital Campaign at Churchill Downs, inside of Millionaires Row, with a theme of Weave a Tapestry of Love, Hope, & Empowerment by Embracing Life Together.

This event was sponsored by Kelley Construction, Nucor Tubular Products, and Tri-Arrows Aluminum Inc… With their support, we were able to help bring great additions to not only the South end of town but great opportunities and resources to the Louisville area. We plan to bring an Intergenerational Community that empowers individuals of all ages, abilities, and aspirations by providing opportunities through innovative vocational, health, and educational services.

Why is Intergenerational Important?

There are people with disabilities, senior citizens, and children in Louisville Metro who could benefit from the Intergenerational Life Center. An intergenerational community refers to a place that provides safety, education, and basic necessities of life for people of all ages and abilities.

“When you bring together children, adults, and individuals with disabilities for planned and informal activities – from daily exercise to art to music-making – children benefit from positive one-on-one attention from nurturing, caring adults; and adults gain a sense of purpose by sharing wisdom and skills. What’s more, adults talk, smile, and participate more fully when the children are around. It’s hard to tell who’s more excited,” said, Sister. Edna Lonergan.

The Community Transformation

Harbor House of Louisville is transforming into a place for growing up and growing whole, bringing generations together. The intergenerational community will be therapeutic from planned activities as well as spontaneous activities. The relaxed atmosphere will enhance opportunities for learning new skills, building new relationships, participating in new activities.

“This is a long-time dream of mine and I am so excited to finally see it all come to fruition. It still feels like just yesterday that I brought my Thesis assignment idea to my Bellarmine professor about bringing together all generations. Not long into the assignment, I was introduced to the founding families of Harbor House and fell in love with the people they served and the mission. I am very excited to bring new opportunities to the Louisville area,” said, CEO Maria Smith

Opportunities for Growth

Children, senior citizens, and people with disabilities interacting with each other and nurture long-lasting relationships. Imagine a place where people are integrated, not isolated. A place where a senior citizen becomes a foster grandparent to a child whose grandparents live out of town or have passed away, and a place where people with disabilities are accepted for their abilities, not their disabilities.
